Visit to HANABI SKILL ACADEMY in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
On January 23, 2026, we visited HANABI SKILL ACADEMY in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The academy is an educational institution dedicated to developing professionals in the hospitality and culinary fields.
During our visit, we were warmly welcomed by Mr. Nigell Hoh, Academy Principal, and Mr. Shawn Chong, Head of Marketing & Business Development. We were given the opportunity to introduce Taiwa Gakuen and its schools to approximately 30 students.
Strong Interest in Food and Japan
At the information session, we presented an overview of Taiwa Gakuen, the distinctive features of each school, and the unique appeal of Kyoto as a city. The students listened attentively and showed a strong interest in Japanese food culture—unsurprising given their own focus on culinary studies.
We were also pleased to learn that some faculty members are currently studying Japanese and have already attained a certain level of proficiency. This highlighted promising potential for future collaboration and exchange.
A Connection Born from a Wagashi Workshop
Our relationship with HANABI SKILL ACADEMY began with a Wagashi (Japanese confectionery) workshop held at Taiwa Gakuen in July 2025. The workshop was very well received, and during our visit we saw posters and promotional materials for the event displayed on campus. It was deeply moving to see our initiatives being introduced in an overseas educational setting.
The next workshop is scheduled for March 2026, and seven participants have already registered. The academy has expressed a strong desire to continue these workshops in the future. We feel that exchange through Wagashi—an important element of Japan’s traditional culture—is steadily taking root.
International Exchange Begins with Experience
Internationalization is not limited to large-scale programs or long-term study abroad. Short-term experiential programs, such as Wagashi workshops, can serve as meaningful entry points—allowing participants to experience Japanese food culture firsthand and deepen their interest.
These small but meaningful steps may eventually lead to study abroad opportunities or career pathways in Japan.
Our collaboration with HANABI SKILL ACADEMY is a prime example of “internationalization beginning from small entry points.” We look forward to continuing the Wagashi workshops and further strengthening the relationship between our institutions.
